Major Breakthrough FAQs

How is this different from a career assessment?

Career assessments can be helpful, but it’s just as possible for them to be puzzling, disorienting, or even just a poor match. That’s because even the best assessments are too generic to be truly helpful. They’re trying to pigeonhole you as a type of person.

At Vocationality, we know you’re absolutely unique, not a type (and definitely not one-size-fits-all). We also know that your Best Work is radically specific, even if it’s going to end up matching a college major and a career direction. It’s going to be much more helpful as a result to capture those personalized specifics of who you’re made to be and what you’re made to do.

There are aspects of Major Breakthrough that may feel like an assessment — especially some of the exercises — but you’ll find that what comes out of each exercise is not a “type” but instead personalized insights.

How is this different from career coaching or counseling?

Career coaching or counseling can be extremely helpful to some people in their careers, or even at the point of choosing a college major. But there are two big challenges:

  1. Career coaching and counseling are too unstructured to be truly helpful. We’ve worked with many clients who went to 5, 10, 15 sessions and wondered, “How will I know when I’m done?”

  2. Equally tough is the reality that there’s often a burden on you to know what questions to bring. Some days you know the questions but, many days, you don’t and simply want to be guided.

Each Vocationality program is a pathway, not an unstructured set of sessions. We’ll help you know where to start, how much to do, what to do next, and when you’re ready to bring your discoveries to life.

Each Major Breakthrough experience is led by an expert, empathetic Guide. But your Guide is not there to ask, “What should we be talking about today?” They’re there to guide you through a pathway we know will lead to the breakthrough you’re seeking.

Do you guarantee a college major that fits my teen perfectly?

Well, that’s a great question. What we do guarantee is that, if your teen does the work in the Major Breakthrough program, they will discover what is clear to them now about their Best Work, across the categories that help to clarify a career direction and a college major.

Typically that is enough clarity to help you narrow down or identify a college major direction, with evidence to back up your choice.

But everyone begins from a different place, with different amounts of life experience and work experience, and — as a result — the amount of clarity and the kinds of clarity will differ from person to person.

Every now and then, the same Pathway that leads one person to a single, clear college major leads someone else to perspective on themselves for the first time, and tools that help them start paying attention more clearly to the Best Work they’re designed to do. Both people benefit, big time.

Can I sit in on my teen’s program?

We don’t allow this, no. We’ve found that your teen benefits immensely from a safe space where they know they can share anything and dig into any possible evidence of their Best Work. That safe space is a tricky thing to create, so we don’t even allow our Guides to work with their own family members as a result.

The goal is to gain true insight into your teen’s Best Work, and that’s best achieved when there are no distractions, even well-meaning distractions.

Here’s how we do include parents in Major Breakthrough:

  • We send you regular emails to help you know what topics or Best Work aspects your teen is learning and leaning into, as well as suggesting how you can be supportive of their work.

  • Your teen will choose three Insight Partners (people their Guide will reach out to for input from time to time). A parent is often one of those three.

  • After the 6 Weeks of Breakthrough are finished, your Guide will reach out to schedule a Parents Chat with you. The Guide will have asked your teen what they’re comfortable having the Guide share with you during that Chat, but that usually includes the vast majority of what’s been discovered.

Why does Major Breakthrough cost what it does?

We’re not aware of any other career discernment or career guidance programs like Major Breakthrough — a personalized pathway to Best Work clarity, especially for teens trying to choose a college major.

That uniqueness means we could charge whatever we wanted.

Our desire, however, is to make Major Breakthrough as accessible as possible to as many families as possible. That’s because our desire is to work toward a world where it’s normal for careers to be aligned with True Self and Best Work … and that will take a lot of people!

So we’ve tried to keep our prices as reasonable as possible, while still honoring our extraordinary Guides and the decade+ of work we’ve put into our one-of-a-kind pathways.

Our hope is that the value of Major Breakthrough is at least twice what it costs, and ideally, 10 times the cost, in what it unlocks for your future.
